It all started with a birthday present.

The Nanopreamp by Klementz.

I received this Nanopreamp as a gift from my best friends for my 40th birthday. They know about my love for dub and reggae music and decided to go one step further with this gift. In the culture of sound systems, a preamp is the heart of the system. It is the most important tool to adjust the sound and add typical elements like dub siren and delay.

A preamp turns a soundsystem into an instrument

The operator (selector/DJ) uses the preamplifier to control the volume and frequency ranges of the speakers. He or she adjusts the sound for each song.

Of course, I was excited about this new device and started trying out different speakers to build a small sound system.

This is a first attempt to control several speakers with the preamp
The experiments became more and more creative. I used speakers that I had at home

The sound was quite nice, but I wanted to take it to the next level and started building my own speakers.

I started with a tiny scoop

This is my first attempt to transfer the horn design to a small speaker

But the speakers got bigger and bigger

That´s a 10 inch bass speaker cabinet in horn design.
I only used materials that I had at home. Most of it was reused.
At the top you can see the high and mid-frequency speakers. In the centre are the bass speakers and at the bottom the sub-bass speaker.

At this point there was no turning back. It was time to build a serious scoop.

I had some 15-inch woofers at home and decided to build the cabinet according to the plans of the JBL 4530. I got all the material for free. I used chipboard that would otherwise have been thrown away.

The first bass horn, built according to the JBL plans.
Almost finished.
This is a funny looking compilation of different speakers. Playing with the speakers was important to understand the sound of the different frequency bands of the preamp.

The sound of this new loudspeaker blew me away. I had to go further and started building mid-range speakers.

And tweeter…

Now I needed some kickbass

And a control tower

But I didn´t like the aesthetics

So I had to build a very last speaker to fill the gap

First tryout at night

First big appearance at our Forst Fest

The soundsystem did a very good job. The sound was very decent with loads of subbass, crystal clear highs and slap-in-your-face mids.

Yes the wheel started to turn. But just with one particular song: Witness the fitness by Roots Manuva.
